The Spreadsheet and BI

What's the most commonly used BI tool? At 67% of the companies we surveyed in CIO Insight's recent Business Intelligence survey, it's the spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets are great tools, of course -- but that's not what CIOs hope to see after investing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on analytical tools. So it's good news that CIOs do begin to wean their company's employees away from over-relying on spreadsheets as they gain experience with BI tools. Here are the numbers:

Agree/disagree:
The most commonly used business intelligence tool in my company remains the spreadsheet:

Less than two years experience with BI: 82% agree
Two to four years experience: 68%
5 or more years experience: 44%.

(N=214)

Forty-four percent is still a high number, however. How can CIOs get it to go lower? I think one of the best ways is simply to make BI tools easier to use and more informative. There's some correlation between dissatisfaction with BI tools and reliance on spreadsheets: 82% of organizations that are dissatisfied with BI information rely foremost on spreadsheets. That's true for only 61% of organizations that are satisfied with the information they receive from their BI systems.
