Free Corporate E-Mail? No Thanks.

The best known example of SaaS (software as a service)--free Webmail such as Yahoo Mail, Hotmail or Gmail--may be enormously popular among individuals. But one of the interesting findings from our new survey on SaaS is how few companies are willing to make it their main e-mail system.

My company uses free Webmail services like Yahoo Mail, MSN Hotmail or Gmail as its corporate e-mail system.

Agree: 7%
Disagree: 93%

The percentages remain the same (give or take a point) whether the company is between $5 and $99 million, between $100 and $999 million, or over $1 billion in revenues.

And the penetration of even licensed SaaS e-mail isn't all that high: just 18 percent overall.

Free isn't good enough to get companies to give up Outlook, Notes and the other e-mail systems they've used for years.

Its not that these companies do want the free email I believe like I tell my clients allot of the reason behind not using Yahoo, Hotmail or the others for business is because it does not lend to your ability to be a business. To have a Corp Email lends to a certain degree of being as professional business. If I was to send a email to a client from me@mybusiness.com vs meatmybusiness@freeemail.com. Its like you dress for the job, you also provide a image for the company. With email setup costing so little its a wonderful bargain to and good idea. So much in fact that Yahoo also offers the ability to use your domain name through their system. Its all about image, or at least it is to me.
