Missing In Action: What Happened to 10 IT Innovators?

To paraphrase Douglas MacAruthur: Old IT innovators never die; they just fade away. The glory days for 10 IT execs and thought-leaders of yore may be history, but that doesn't mean they've been inactive. They've just faded from public view.

Our friends at eWEEK compiled a list of 10, one-time highly visible computer executives, and furnish updates of their whereabouts. They include the co-founder of DEC [remember the minicomputer?] and an ex-IBM chairman.

After checking out Where Are They Now: 10 IT Execs You Only Thought Retired, come back to this blog and let us know what other IT innovators of the past you'd like to learn more about.

We'd especially like to hear from those who remember what B.U.N.C.H stands for.

Georg Rybing :

Hey, that's an easy one:

Burroughs, Univac, NCR, CDC, Honeywell, all the guys who tried to fight against IBM..... what happened to them...?

Andy Novacek :

Barksdale from Netscape? Would have been more interesting to learn what the real innovators behind Netscape, (Mark Andreesen and Jim Clark) are up to these days.

Andy N. :

OH - btw - Burroughs, Univac, NCR, Control Data,Honeywell = B.U.N.C.H. as in you have IBM and a BUNCH of others.

Anyone remember who the "Fair Children" are...?

The Sheik :

Ah, yes. Snow White (IBM) and the 7 dwarfs. Burroughs was Doc, because they wrote their OS in an HLL instead of assembler!! And GE was Dopey, because they quit just before the computer industry really took off. Someone else will have to recall the other five.
