CIOs Eye Higher IT Spend in 2009, But ...

An IT budgeting survey of more than 300 senior IT leaders who belong to the Society for Information Management suggests good times ahead for many IT organizations, but there's a but. SIM conducted the survey on projected IT 2009 spending prior to the latest economic turmoil of tight credit and plunging stock market prices.

Highlights of the survey:

• 44 percent project 2009 IT budgets to rise from 2008.
• 43 percent estimate headcount will increase.
• 75 percent see IT staff salaries rising next year.
• 5.2 percent of IT budgets will be earmarked for outsourcing, a 2 percent increase from 2008.

The study confirms business leaders continue to view IT as an important strategic partner and understand that it plays an important role in growing organizations, even in times of economic distress, Jerry Luftman, SIM vice president for academic affairs and an IT professor at Stevens Institute, says in a statement accompanying the survey results.

"With all of the concern regarding our economy, it appears as though IT and business executives are working closely together to ensure they are well prepared," Luftman says. "Budget and headcount forecasts remained strong, despite the fact that economic conditions were weakening at the time the survey was taken."
