Workers iPhone the Office

Apple's iPhone is coming to the workplace, much to the chagrin of IT departments fearful of security breaches.

Nearly 70 percent of American professionals shopping for mobile devices who own an iPhone or intend to buy one in the next 12 months plan to use it for personal and business use, according to a poll by the research firm IDC.

Respondents told pollsters they'll use the iPhone for personal information management such as contacts and calendaring, corporate e-mail, intranet and customer relationship management. Whether it's an iPhone or just a plain cell phone, two of three respondents said they use their mobile device for personal and business purposes.

Apple last month announced it will make available in February a toolkit to allow outsiders to develop apps for the iPhone, though as my colleague Edward Cone reports, outsiders already have begun to do so.

And, as many corporate IT managers have discovered, if workers want to use a certain technology at work, they'll have difficulty stopping them.
