Gmail: The endless reload story: Updated
|
Gmail: the endless reload story I thought it was just me and my new updated version of Firefox, but I am not alone in finding my gmail account goes into an endless loop of refresh. There is even an endless reload forum at Google started on this
The amount of helpful advice starts off with the basic try a reload instruction and escalates into clearing caches, private data and onwards. I find going to the slow connection mode works, but that mode does block graphics. In the dumb advice category, here is what gmail puts up as a help message This is taking longer than usual. Try reloading the page. Imagine if that was the only advice being offered by your IT staff when you can't access mail. This may all be one more reason why gmail for your business is just not ready for prime time. BTW, I tried the cache clearing, the private data clearing and all the suggestions in the forum. So far, the only way to read email is to stick it back in the slow lane. I'll keep you posted on my progress. I'm going to head over to the Mac side of my systems and see what I run into there. So, I wandered over to the Mac where yes I am still running OS/X. 10. Someday I will give Leopard a workout. Anyways, and as expected, Gmail works fine on the Mac. I've had a lot of emails and comments on the original post. Workarounds have included going back to IE on the browser, trying out Opera and skipping the .com gmail address in favor of the http address. I'm also detecting a lot of frustration in dealing with Google here. How about you? |

You may try Opera v9.51 for Gmail, Eric. It's rocket-fast and I haven't seen any reloading issues (running under Leopard).
But given Google is the new Microsoft when it comes to browser wars, you have to detour around the Google browser-check script to let Opera load Gmail2. "Do No Evil." ;)

I had this same issue until I stopped going to gmail.com and instead started my gmail by using https://mail.google.com . That seems to work every time.

My browser is always the current version of Firefox. I encounter this problem not for my gmail use but for Google Docs. Suddenly one day I could not load any online documents. Instead, my browser session for Google Docs entered into an endless loop stating that it was loading the page. Nothing on my device had changed just prior to this occurance: no browser updates, no antivirus updates, no OS patches, no software installs, no Java updates ... nothing. I contacted Google tech support for help. They asked what browser version I was using and suggested that it must be my browser. But I had been using Google Docs since the very beginning with Firefox and without issue until that point. My question to them was "what changed on your end?" As an extremely annoying outcome, I now have to launch Internet Explorer to access Google Docs. I am still a satisfied gmail customer, but my experience really soured my view of Google.

If you go to Tools>Google Gears Settings and
disable Google Gears for the "docs.google.com"
domain, I think it will solve the problem.
Or just go to Tools>Add-Ons>Extensions and
disable Google Gears completely. Or both.

I'm experiencing the same problem on Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer as well, on the same machine. It can't be a browser problem! At the moment I'm only seeing Gmail through the slow "Basic HTML" view.

I used to have the same problem. I followed Jacques' advice, went to https://mail.google.com and that works fine.
