Trouble in Twitterland

On the heels of last week's service problems -- not a first-time issue for Twitter -- comes some stinging criticism of the micro-blogging platform's culture and practices. "Twitter has made it so I -- and increasingly the developers I interview who are building stuff on top of Twitter -- don't trust Twitter," writes Robert Scoble, who has been doing the enterprise 2.0 thing since the beginning.

I wrote long ago that companies may end up developing their own Twitter-like platforms to deliver some of the service's functionality in a stable, managed environment. But doing so won't recreate the powerful social medium that can provide businesses with a lot of valuable information.

What companies need from Twitter is a better Twitter.
