Don't Let Android Go Zune

As the first Android phones head to market, it's important to remember that iPhone-mania exists independent of debates over generative platforms and such.

People like iPhones because they look great and feel great and allow mobile access to the net.

It's about the package and the contents -- but the contents that count are the internet, not the operating system.

Android phones may indeed "drive the mass market adoption of full-featured 'smartphones' and applications," as the linked VB article says. To do that, though, they will have to have some killer apps, not just an open OS.

Do they need to be as cool as the iPhone? Probably not. The net is cool enough on its own. But Google's partners need to be careful how they position their new devices, or else they'll end up looking like the mobile-phone equivalent of Zune.

Seriously they need some killer apps? Did you do any research before you wrote this article? Check out the winners of Googles $3.75 million developers challenge. Plus all the runners up and you will see that Android will have the apps to compete with the iphone. http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/
There are some many apps that can happen with Android that could never happen with the iphone because of their highly restrictive SDK.

That's great, Gus. But customers decide what's killer, and what's not. I'm not hating on Android -- I've been banging the open platform drum pretty hard -- I'm just pointing out that iPhone is a phenomenon because of it's cool design and the net. We'll see what the various Android phones bring to the party, and how people react.

Slow down on praising Google.
I'm an ordinary User and my Gmail
looks ugly, blows up when you backspace too fast and generally is a poor email features.

So, Google needs to improve what it
already has before it takes over the world.

Microsoft is just as bad with it's maliase.
