Google, Not So Different After All
|
More on Google's famous "don't be evil" pledge: My answer to the question of Google being "evil" or not is that Google's motto was a promise that it wouldn't behave like a typical big company, and that as a public company it has obligations to shareholders that make the motto moot. Here's some evidence for the just-another-big-corporation theory: the company employs a lot of contractors, which allows it to save on benefits and escape some of the scrutiny that comes with layoffs of fulltime workers. Not atypical for a big company -- which is the point. It's evil only my understanding of Google's definition of the word. More here. |

Google does not seem to be spinning off core divisions to form a partially owned sub contractor like the auto industry (breaks are core), Boeing (fuselage assembly is core) and banking companies (customer service is core). Google sees non-core or short term tasks that need completed and hires contractors. This creates opportunities for small businesses, consultants, to get a big name client and make some money.
