Truth Travels Fast

I spoke to a Sunday school class here in Greensboro yesterday about the internet and the way it's changing media culture and consumption. Pretty much my standard talk on the subject, tailored a bit for the particular audience. Anyway, I trotted out the famous line (often attributed to Mark Twain, but proverbial before his time) that a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on.

The incredible response to that Wall Street Journal article about Google and net neutrality is a reminder that fact-checking can now happen very quickly, and very visibly.

Even the Journal's website acknowledged some criticisms of the article, although to my mind they should have flagged the controversy on the same page as the original report, rather than just providing a bland link to feedback.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, they do in tomorrow's print edition, which to some readers still represents the "real" Wall Street Journal.
