A Test for the GOTV Machine


An opportunity, and a test, for Obama's get-out-the-vote machine:

A nationwide poll of Americans who are eligible to vote for the first time, or who skipped the previous election but are registered now, found that they back Sen. Obama over Sen. John McCain by a margin of 61% to 30%...

...But that hardly means the Obama campaign can count on them. When asked to rank their interest in the Nov. 4 election, just 49% said they were "very interested."

...Traditionally it has been highly difficult for campaigns to get newly registered voters, especially young ones, to show up on Election Day.

Elsewhere, TechPresident's Nancy Scola calls Joe Trippi's estimate of a 2-3% bump at the polls from a superior ground game "more art than science." Agreed.

An interesting post by Ian Fried points out one of the keys to the Obama strategy: "This attention to the smaller, red states does not mean that the Obama campaign is depleting resources from the usual, bigger battleground states."

Obama's tech machine needs some fine tuning in the implementation. I've gotten multiple emails from his tech machine on some days, those emails containing multiple buttons to "donate now". It gets tiresome. Redundancy doesn't work for everyone.

The tech machine also seems to have bought multiple banner ad placements on emails. Unfortunately, their banner ad brings my system (no, it's not that old a laptop) to a crawl when I have multiple things running, until the banner does its stuff.

Obama designers need to adopt KISS, and keep things "lite". Otherwise, these messages get irritating.
