Attack of the killer video, again

Another video-kills-the-web story follows the script to perfection: start with an alarming statement, then step back and say, well, not so much, although there are problems at the ISP level.

This one's from the BBC: "Speaking in London in late April, Jim Cicconi, AT&T's vice president of legal affairs, said the burgeoning amount of video would consume all the net's bandwidth in two years."

Previously, it was the New York Times. The Economist has played along, too.

Our story from 2007: "Predictions of the Internet's imminent demise have been around almost as long as public interest in the net itself. But lately there's been something of a bull market in doom and gloom. Is it time to panic? Probably not."

Credit the Beeb for at least mentioning the political angle of network neutrality -- it may be worth noting that the AT&T official quoted works in the legal department

As we said, "Telecoms are poor-mouthing existing capacity to make their case against net neutrality."
