That's true. I think what Ken is saying in his article is that Google has changed the algorithm and has started to pull the rug out from under traditional SEO. Instead, Google is focusing on factors that make up a more reliable search. They want strong content on a topic that makes the originator an expert. If someone searches on your topic, and you are the expert then your content shows up. I guess to answer your question, I believe (and I'm not speaking on behalf of Ken) that the way we will be driving customers to our web pages for customer engagement is changing and will be focused on strong content instead of on back links.
