Lose Some, Win Some

Back in the day when we talked about installing automation, folks were afraid of losing their jobs. But in reality, automation technology, while creating better parts, in most cases, and faster access to data, actually required the addition of people, not a reduction. There may have been a loss of productivity in old paper methods in which data reporting was handled by the same accountants, foremen, etc. But with automation we also need system administrators, DBAs, programmers, IT managers and so forth, in addition to those accountants and foremen.
