I'm at the Personal Democracy Forum in New York. The theme this year is "rebooting the system," with the system in question being American politics.
Some highlights of the morning: former Dean online organizing honcho Zephyr Teachout contrasts the industrial mode of understanding the internet with the democratic mode. The former is about big numbers of people signing up for various campaign funcitons, the latter about actual involvement of informed citizens. Zephyr asks: is power being distributed, or just the tasks of the campaign?
A couple of pretty presentations map links and influence among blogs. These things are overviews, so it's not fair to demand too much, but the information as presented is of limited value. Does the number of blogs mentioning McCain really show that Obama's lead on the net is slimmer than thought, or would any relevant measurement include things like Obama's one million Facebook friends. Etc. I will contact both presenters to drill down a bit on enterprise uses.
