More Digital Taylorism

Retailers are using software to speed up the work of employees, says the Wall Street Journal.

Two months ago, the paper reported on software that increases the efficiency of scheduling worker hours. Our thoughts at the time.

This strikes me as a real management issue for CIOs. The CFO wants to cut labor costs, especially in a bum economy. The IT solution is there. But workers -- and some customers -- may not like the speed-up system, which increases stress on checkers and doesn't lower check-out times if the number of register-workers decreases.

Understanding the human factors is critical -- but human factors are not traditionally regarded as an area of core competence for IT.
