Conflicting Realities for Telecom

The telecommunications industry is bracing for a new era of increased regulation. The WSJ frames things from the industry POV, which is fine, but another publication might have led this story by saying, "The new administration means to make sure that the internet continues to operate as an open, generative system, greatly increasing the chances for innovation and remaining true to the vision of Tim Berners-Lee when he created the web."

More for the article: "New congressional leaders as well as policy makers in the Obama administration are expected to press for fresh limits on media consolidation and require phone and cable firms to open their networks to Internet competitors, lobbyists and industry officials say."

Interesting to see how the governmental push against corporate gigantism plays out in the face of recessionary pressures that favor the big getting bigger.

Looks like rural internet access will get a boost, too.
