Are You Behind the Curve With Mobility?

It's a bit flabbergasting that so many organizations and CIOs are so far behind the mobility curve. Granted, the technology has only taken off in a true sense over the last few years. But based on a stream of research reports and news stories, it's clear that many organizations aren't coping with BYOD or harnessing mobile technology to their maximum advantage.
A just-released CDW report, Mobility at Work Report: Making Personal Devices a Professional Asset, illustrates there's a serious problem. The tech reseller surveyed 1,200 IT and non-IT professionals and found that only 37 percent of them have deployed or are deploying mobile device management solutions, and only 36 percent have deployed or are deploying mobile application management solutions. What's more, many IT executives are relying on only the most basic measures to secure mobile devices and their access to networks.
There's no question that the IT landscape is constantly changing. There's also no denying that mobility creates huge challenges, and it requires new ways of thinking about data. However, some of the findings are downright baffling. For instance, 14 percent of respondents say they are uncomfortable with requiring a password for network login, 18 percent cringe at the idea of creating user guidelines, 23 percent don't like the idea of using encryption for storing data, and 26 percent dislike the idea of enforcing the use of a screen lock.
Reality check #1: These are among the most basic protections!
But there are other things that organizations must focus on, the CDW report notes. Only half of IT professionals say their department actually speaks with employees to understand how they use personal mobile devices. However, this is an essential building block for a mobile strategy and technology road map, data and device policies, security and network integration, and more.
Enterprises must also implement policies through automated procurement, provisioning and deployment, typically through a management portal; they must integrate security with real-time monitoring and expense management; provide adequate support, including live and self-service help desks; and offer cross-platform integration to maximize employee collaboration, productivity and efficiency.
Reality check #2: Ignoring these issues won't make them go away!
