CIO as Chief Intelligence Officer?
As 2009 drew to a close--and various prognostications came out about CIO priorities for 2010--I had a feeling the topic would spring up again. BT Global Services today released a report that gets right to the heart of the issue. And while I think it's usually a futile effort to deliberate what the CIO title will morph into in the future, BT offers a worthwhile talking point: "This is the primary future role of the CIO: providing fast, secure, reliable access to information and the applications and tools needed to analyze it from the bottom up. The CIO who enables the workforce to make best use of information by turning it into enterprise intelligence might be better described in the future as the chief intelligence officer." I think you could argure that CIOs have been Chief Intelligence Officers strictly because IT has been the chief provider of information for years. I think it is more a matter of CIOs taking designed actions to fulfill this role in a deliberate manner. I suggest we stop heaping more and more accountability on the CIO and view the Chief Intelligence Officer as a specific role (for large organizations). I would prefer to have a leader focus 24/7 on the strategic nature of data and information -- without dealing with all of the other things CIOs have on their plates today.
